What means the most to us are the spiritual relationships between people and animals.
When we walked around a Minneapolis lake in 1996 with our yellow lab Taylor, people asked, “Do you know your dog is smiling?” Taylor radiated so much joy that people smiled back. We started talking about the spiritual qualities animals bring into people’s lives – joy, gratitude, courage, unconditional love. We realized that we wanted to use the power of story to make people aware of their spiritual connection with animals.
The lake walk that started Angel Animals ignited a flame in us to bring more love in the world. At that time, we were empty-nesters who were adopting pets. Our two cockatiels, two cats, and Taylor were teaching us spiritual lessons every day.
Fourteen animal books later, sometimes we’re so busy rushing around filling up our never-ending to-do lists that we lose focus on the present moment (guilty as charged!) and don’t take time to enjoy our pets. That’s when we stop, take another walk around that same lake, reconnect with our dog (now we have a rescued cocker spaniel), and remember what it’s all about – sharing the love.
Here are some of the great ways we know to deepen participation in life in meaningful ways: Get a pet. Volunteer in animal rescue. Train your pet to do animal-assisted therapy. Any or all of these activities can help to remind you that no matter what else is going in life, it’s really all about the love.
