enrichment

Enrichment means using my life force energy purposefully every day to enhance my relationships and my opportunities for helping or inspiring others.
Many years ago, I adopted William Blake’s idea that “energy is eternal delight.” Since I’m blessed with great energetic stamina, I’ve always delighted in physical exercise. My daily schedule generally includes an aerobic activity – anything from racket sports to hiking or fast walking. I get a great deal of pleasure from experiencing my body in motion. For me, vigorous exercise is a healthy way of directing my corporal energy.
My mental energy hasn’t always been as well-directed. Although my thirst for academic knowledge has been nurtured and sustained, there have been times when I’ve caused upset by misdirecting the cognitive and emotional aspects of my life force energy.
To be more specific, I experienced great difficulty in letting go of the past and forgiving people who behaved in ways that I felt had damaged my life. “If only …” featured quite heavily in my repertoire. It took me a long time to understand my own role in relationships that weren’t working, to see that I was trying to change people to fit my ideal rather than accepting them for who they actually were.
Several years ago, I was lucky enough to be introduced to the Buddhist technique of mindfulness, the work of Byron Katie, and the insightful texts of Krishnamurti, along with the loving support and wisdom of my amazing children.
Today, I live a more thoughtful and charmed life, which allows me to handle pleasant, neutral, and unpleasant experiences with equanimity. I celebrate and give thanks for my blessings and, when things don’t go according to plan or are downright horrible, I always try to find the silver lining – there invariably is one. I allow people to be themselves, and, at the same time, I’m careful to be true to myself and my purpose – which is to enrich the lives of everyone with whom I connect.
In the words of Krishnamurti, “Decide to be extraordinary and do what you need to do – now.”
