I want to create “legacy work” that inspires and helps people.
I had this desire for a long time, but it took a while to figure out what needed to happen for me to do that, and also to understand what I had to offer the world.
More than anything external, I think inertia, fear, and insecurities are the most common obstacles that get in the way of people staying committed to what’s meaningful.
I try not to get off track. But if I do, it helps to first think about why it occurred. Am I losing motivation for this particular project or activity? If so, that’s usually a good sign that something needs to change, because in the long-term it’s very difficult to motivate ourselves to do things we don’t enjoy or benefit from. But if that’s not the case … well, I just try to start with something small and get back into the rhythm.
I’ve always pursued a wide range of projects at the same time, I thrive on deadlines, and I enjoy living actively. But one of the things I’m trying to learn is how to do these things and maintain internal peace at the same time. That’s often eluded me, but I recognize that it will be important as I move on to higher-level work.
I try to position myself as a learner, and part of that is the belief that everyone has something they can teach me (or anyone else).
