Elaine Norton is a single 60-something mama. She has been Registered Nurse for over forty years, currently working for an Infectious Diseases specialist in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her daughter, Erin, lives in Los Angeles.
The most meaningful time in my life was the birth of my daughter, Erin. Most of my early adult life I thought the most important thing was to get married. Don’t get me wrong; marriage is a good thing. But it does not compare to having a child. This little person you create will be part of your life forever.
I got separated and then divorced when Erin was very little. Her dad did help out, but for most of the time it was just the two of us. Being a single mother had its ups and downs. Experiencing the world through the eyes of this little lady made me forget the downs.
We accomplished our goals together, or at least we tried. We both got our college degrees. My goal was to get mine before her, and, two years before she received her college diploma, I received mine.
Our mother/daughter relationship has grown. Now we are not just mother and daughter. We are also friends. I know I feel that way, (and I hope she does also!)
What keeps people from leading meaningful lives? Some people spend so much energy on themselves instead of focusing on the big picture. Raising that little lady and watching her turn into a wonderful young woman, that was a part of the big picture for me.
