heart

I lost my sister to a brain tumor several years ago. It was quite shocking. Vicki was perfectly fine, then she collapsed and was given three months to live. She passed away about three-and-a-half months later.
When that happened, it taught me the most valuable, important lesson about life, which is: Life is short. It doesn’t matter how long we live, life is still short. It also taught me that as long as I have good health, safety, peace, and happiness for myself and those I love and care about, everything else will be okay. I’ve tried to take that message out to other folks every day. So a meaningful life or a meaningful day for me is one in which I ask myself, Did I add some joy to someone’s life today? and the answer is yes.
Let’s say I wake up one day and the car doesn’t start and I’ve got to get to a meeting. That’s not a fun thing. But it’s not the worst thing in the world that could happen to me. I watched my sister die of a brain tumor, so I’ve seen worse. When I remember that, my perspective shifts. I start to see the glass as half full rather than half empty.
I know of another important way to stay on track. It’s something I say to the young people I give presentations to. I’ve given more than 2,200 presentations over the years to different groups, including college students and kids, and I tell young people the same thing all the time: You are who you hang around. It’s a very simple concept. If you want to be a drug dealer, go hand out with drug dealers. Find out what they know, then end up like them. But if you want to be a winner, hang around with winners. Spend time with positive people who are going places, who talk positively about others rather than tear them down. Then their habits and characteristics will start to rub off.
What it takes to be successful in any area of your life isn’t how much smarts you have, it’s how much heart you have.
