accountable

“Taking action consistent with your desired outcomes” is the simple definition my colleague and mentor, Mark Samuel, coined in his ground-breaking organizational effectiveness work with businesses and individuals. This guiding principle keeps me on track by continually clarifying: What are my desired outcomes? Do my actions line up in making those happen? Can I count on myself to follow through on what matters to me? And when I fall short of my goals, can I forgive myself quickly and get back in the game? With practice, I’ve learned to put away the whip of self-recrimination and replace it with compassion for myself and for all my fellow travelers as we figure out our paths in this crazy and amazing thing we call life.
Some of the other words that inspire me every day are SERVICE, JOY, and GRATITUDE. These words remind me of my higher purpose and provide me with the good medicine I need when life isn’t clicking along as smoothly as I’d like. In those times, I remember to be grateful for the things that are going well. When I turn on my faucet, I have clean water to drink. When I look out my window, there are birds singing and tall majestic trees standing by. If I’m feeling lonely, I take comfort in having a loving partner, a supportive family, and great friends I can turn to.
Remembering what a fortunate life I have gets me out of bed so I can figure out how to share that good fortune with others. How can I be a catalyst to help people and work teams achieve their next levels of excellence? In helping others, I contribute to a more peaceful, healthier, and more sustainable Earth, so we and future generations can respect and honor the amazing beings that we are and this most magnificent planet upon which we live.
Namaste.
