emergence

Life is movement. No movement, no life.
I’ve learned in my 50+ years that presuming to know how life will move – what’s around the next corner (and especially the one beyond that) – is wishful thinking, and often delusional and dangerous. The more we hold on to a story of what’s going to happen or what MUST happen, the more we risk contracting, and inhibiting movement.
Recognizing that life is a process of emergence – billions of years of evolution expressing themselves through us and continuing beyond us – puts things into perspective. Try stopping an ocean wave. Nice try! But sense its emergence and position yourself just right and voila! You can go for a great ride.
When we engage with an emergence, we recognize that it’s not about me doing this or you doing that, or my idea or your idea. Rather, we’re tuning in to something beyond us, which includes and encompasses us. It’s also something between us, as we share the wave together.
When I truly embrace emergence, when I show up for what’s happening in the moment, sensing and understanding, connecting and blending (with people, natural forces, ideas, whatever’s moving), it brings flow, well-being, and ease. It also seems to be a highly efficient way to generate results.
Over the past five years I’ve witnessed and experienced the emergence of a community converging around the idea of Conscious Capitalism (CC) – a new paradigm for the way we view and do business and organize our economy. There’s a quickening and deepening of connection at the core of the CC community.
The idea of embracing emergence was deeply integrated into the design of the Catalyzing Conscious Capitalism (C3) Summit, which convened last week. The Summit’s theme (Exploring the Edges of Conscious Leadership), content, and structure developed through a purposeful conversation Rick Voirin and I had, with dozens of others weaving in and out, over the course of seven months.
The Summit continued that pattern of emergence. On the evening of the second day of the Summit, we designed the third day, giving ourselves the opportunity to sense and respond to what emerged during the first two days. People found this refreshing, daring, authentic, and strikingly different. It fostered a powerful conclusion to the Summit and provided much forward momentum.
As more of us converge to face the emerging waves and find ways to ride them together, we may discover a whole new way to engage with life – a way filled with wonder and delight.
