commitment

Teaching and writing are most meaningful to me. I teach a lot and I write a lot. I recently got back from teaching in London, and I’ve been teaching in Santa Fe every week. When I ask people in the classes how many of them are doing morning pages, virtually all the hands in the room shoot up. That feels wonderful to me. I feel like I’m doing a good deed by showing up to teach and by offering tools I know work, like writing morning pages – three handwritten pages a day, written without stopping. It’s a commitment, like teaching. And it works.
I was doing morning pages myself before The Artist’s Way was published. And I’d been teaching for about ten years before I wrote the book, using morning pages as part of the class teachings, so I knew first-hand and from my students that they worked and how much creativity could come from them.
I often say I teach because I want to be unblocked. I find it very difficult to teach people about my tools if I’m not using them myself. So I teach habitually and I habitually get unblocked. Over the past 20 or so years, I’ve had 32 books published. The tools work – not just for me, but for others, too.
People who go through the process of unblocking find creative expression in many, many ways. People come up to me and say, “I used your tools and now I’m a yoga teacher.” Or “ I used your tools and here’s the book I wrote.” Or “I used your tools and I’ve been picked as a participant in a juried show.” A man once come up to me and said, “I used your tools and went to Thailand and directed a feature film.” This is a wonderful thing, knowing about all the creative successes people have because of what I teach. I never get tired of being told the stories because each one is so individual.
For many years before I wrote The Artist’s Way I was a playwright and a Hollywood screenwriter. At some point, I was told I was going to teach, but I resisted it. I didn’t want to. I thought I’d rather do than teach. But what I found was that I can both teach and do. And, in fact, the combination of teaching and doing gives my life more meaning than either one on its own.
