November 17, 2010. The biggest day of my life. On that day, I left the school system. I am taking my education into my own hands. It all started with a conversation. My mom came home from a lunch and told me about this “unschooling” movement. It lit the fuse for me. I got started thinking and planning right away. Everything has changed since that first conversation but not my excitement and motivation for this journey.
Everyone I talk to asks me what my plan is. What will my day look like? What is the next step? I tell them that right now I am sleeping in and decompressing. After that, I do not know. We are programmed to need a plan. Someone once said, “Failing to plan is planning to fail.” I completely disagree with that. Obviously, planning is important sometimes. You can’t perform heart surgery without a plan.
My plan is to live. I know I am going to learn so much, experience so much, and grow so much as a person. I can’t even believe this is happening. The amount of freedom I am going to have is such a blessing and I am so excited!
Some people worry that I won’t be able to have much of a social life. I think I will have the best social life I have ever had. I am already making new friends and growing closer to the ones I have. I love the idea that I will be able to spend time with people deliberately, not just because we are grouped together by age. I think our time together will be much more meaningful and deliberate when we choose the time and cherish every moment.
Some people don’t understand why I am making this choice. Let me clarify something. I know I would survive high school and have a fine life. But, for me surviving is not enough. I want to thrive.
