primal

What’s meaningful to me is my family. And my freedom. And the way belief systems and ideas work at a primal level. There’s something that occurs at a foundational level, like when we grow plants next to each other in a garden and ward bugs off each other or help each other attract the bees needed for pollination. There’s a greater benefit when we work together at a root level.
It’s great to be surrounded by my family. I helped put something else on the planet – my kids – and although they might not be eco-friendly at the moment, or even sustainable, it’s great fun watching them grow and develop. I try to step back and let them grow in their own ways, understanding that they need to figure so much out for themselves.
After I graduated from college I wanted the freedom of starting my own business, but found that I didn’t have the resume experience I needed, so I went out and got that experience, working in advertising with clients like General Motors, IBM, Lego, and Absolut Vodka. Although that gave me a wealth of experience which I now bring to anyone or anything I’m working with, it took me a long time to realize I was trapped in a corporate job. I was highly paid to be as creative as I wanted to be, but I hated it. What I realized is that people go through life walking in someone else’s dream. You may be allowed to do wonderful things, but it’s not quite the same as creating your own dream. Finally, ten years ago, I broke away and started my own company. That’s freedom to me.
I love exploring new things, new ideas. Part of what makes a day meaningful for me is coming up with a great idea. But that’s often a lonely pleasure until the idea gets out of my head and onto the street. Then the idea takes on a whole different character. It rubs up against other ideas and belief systems and even more ideas are created and brought to life.
A lot of things are going happy in the world right now – like the Internet and social media, yet we face amazing challenges as a society. I’m trying to help out with some of those challenges, particularly through education in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math.
We have the potential to grow in ways that are symbiotic. We may need to dig deep.
