confidence

I have such a fun job. Every day I work with people who regularly achieve impossible goals.
But for most of my life I was held back from following my dreams because one little phrase ruled my life:
“If only I was more confident…”
If only I was more confident … I’d ask my boss for a raise … quit my job … ask her to marry me … travel around the world … write my book … sing on stage … make a million dollars … dance in public ….
For much of my life, people thought I was confident, but I never actually felt confident. Although it looked like I was successful, inside I felt nervous and insecure. And I felt like a fraud because I was terrified you’d find out.
So I learned ALL the tricks I could in order to appear more and more confident. But they didn’t work and I ended up feeling less and less confident!
The problem was that I had it the wrong way round.
Confidence isn’t a requirement. Confidence is a result.
Over the past few years I’ve traveled the world to interview the world’s most confident people – people with deep, inner, natural confidence that’s very attractive to be around. I’ve met women who are Olympic athletes and multi-millionaires, guests on Oprah, world-renowned entrepreneurs, and consultants at the White House. I met a woman with no arms who flies planes for a hobby. I met a man who gets paid to break into banks and who once stole a billion dollars. I met a best-selling author and motivational speaker who’s three feet tall and confined to a wheel chair.
What I discovered changed my life and the lives of my clients. Almost every one of those incredible people told me of a childhood of feeling insecure, or a time when a decision almost paralyzed them, or a moment when their next action scared the hell out of them. Some of them even still lack confidence at times.
They’re just like you and me. The only difference is that they take action anyway.
You don’t need to wait for more confidence to take action toward your dreams. Just choose the very next tiniest step you can take. Then take it. And your life will already have begun to change.
