balance

My family is clearly number one. I want whatever I do in my business life to be impactful and I’m currently involved in business that’s making positive change, but I make sure my family life is a higher priority.
I may not always be with my family as much as I’d like, but I stay extremely connected with them. On any given day, I’m text messaging with my boys, emailing with my wife, getting my little girl to talk on the phone – always making sure I’m doing something that keeps us connected.
As my boys have gotten older I’ve become much more focused on how important it is to them that we keep a connection. I’m amazed at how much the small things make a huge difference to them. So something else I do is strategize about the small things so I can spend more time with my family.
I schedule time with my family, even on a small scale, like driving my kids to school for 12 minutes. This morning I woke up my 12-year-old son and said, “Hey, let’s go hang out while I’m working in the gym.” We worked out together and had a chance to be with each other.
Exercising is another thing that helps me maintain balance in my life. I work out for an hour or more early every morning and have become much more health conscious in the last ten years.
If my life gets out of balance, I do whatever I need to do to correct it. I prioritize and say no when I need to. If I haven’t had enough time with my family, I’ll sometimes say no to speaking opportunities.
I’m very disciplined. Before I add anything to my life, I make sure the things most important to me are balanced. My balance is about family, business, and exercise – those are the three things that keep me on track.
