Since my time in the military I’ve been interested in the idea of freedom. When I returned from Iraq I began to examine this from a more internal perspective. The study of self is one way to get some answers. I don’t know what freedom or liberation feels like for any sustained period, but I think its possible to get closer and closer by undoing, unspooling and generally lessening the load.
Lessening the load means trying to get to the places where the knots are, in the nooks and crannies, and unwinding them and letting them flow on freely. I’ve been exploring and doing this for a few years now.
I’ve been trying to be truthful about living my life in a way that’s congruent with what’s most meaningful for me. The more that gets unraveled and unbound, the more obvious that is. It becomes clearer what the things are that I have to do and what’s up for me and what needs to be resolved so I can get closer and closer to the truest form of myself.
When I got back from Iraq I wound up going to an alternative health clinic, thinking that because of having been in a combat situation and because of all the synthetic food we ate over there, I might want to do some cleansing. Also, I wanted to get to the bottom of something I’d been noticing, that in social situations I’d feel really uncomfortable and start to sweat. As I started trying to learn how to relax, the process became more about realizing how important it is to get to know the self. Maybe getting to know the self doesn’t have the quickest impact physically, but it seems to me that if I resolve things on the non-physical level, those changes eventually show up in the physical form.
