For me, living a life of meaning requires living on the edge of my potential and weaving possibility into every day. One of my favorite thinkers, Umair Haque, recently wrote, “…every moment of every day of this year, and every year that follows, what I want you to map is the uncharted shore of potential.…” It’s in navigating that unknown territory that I find the most meaning.
Though I’ve always suffered from chronic depression, the worst bout I suffered through was after college while I was managing a store for a national book retailer. The job was not especially exciting and it didn’t pay squat but it wasn’t terrible either. I was challenged, surrounded by books everyday, and my co-workers were generally pleasant and interesting.
Yet as month after month went by, then year after year, with little hope of promotion and no other job prospects for a know-it-all with a BA in religious studies, I felt stuck. Feeling stuck–the unique place where lack of freedom meets up with lack of possibilities resulting in a lack of action–was the opposite of exploring my potential. And I wanted to die.
Before I could do anything stupid, I inadvertently created a series of life experiences–not the least of which was becoming a mother–that pushed me back to the edge of my potential. Maintaining that edge, gently, has given me the longest stretch of meaningful, joyful living I’ve ever experienced.
Today, I ask “What if?” much more often than “What’s next?” That sense of curiosity allows each moment to have an edge all its own. If life ever starts to look bleak, all I need to do is look to that uncharted shore and discover the true possibilities before me.
