purpose

I teach processes to follow to become great. However, I cannot inspire greatness if there is no passion. Process is everything, yet what good is having the right process if you aren’t applying it in the right area?
Harry Herbert Frazee, the owner of the Boston Red Sox in the early 1900’s, sold Babe Ruth to the Yankees, causing the best thing to ever happen to the Yankees franchise and the worst thing to ever happen to the Red Sox.
However, he sold Ruth not to dump the money back into the Red Sox, but to use the money to fund a musical theater company. Frazee put his money where he felt the most passion – which wasn’t in baseball but in theater.
The story warns of the detriments that can be caused by being in the wrong place because your passion is somewhere else.
A good exercise is to think, if you had a million dollar check given to you today to begin a business, what would that business be? What would its mission and goal be? What steps would you take to have that company be successful? Would you be the CEO or would you work within the company in a specific area?
The exercise helps you to locate your passion. The business is your passion. The mission and goal is where you find a sense of purpose. The steps to take are what you need to do to get there. And your job title is what aspect of yourself you want to give to that passion.
Your purpose or your passion comes from what motivates you. I call it your X Factor. Finding it is the first step before discovering the right process to make your passion come to life.
