As a child I was given the gift of many challenges. My mother was mentally ill—raging, suicidal, and nursing a bottle most days. My father was absent much of the time, and when present, sexualized me. Irrational behavior was the norm. I found peace sitting at the piano, playing whatever came out. I could breathe there. Through my music, I channelled the pain I was feeling.
This continued for many years, through a college degree in piano performance. After college, I found the courage to open my mouth and sing. Something I’d felt as a rumble in my stomach for years, but had never dared to do. The world stopped and looked up!
Since then I’ve had a wonderful career as a singer/songwriter in film. I’ve also released over nine albums as a solo artist. But, while my career has been bubbling along, my personal life has been in shambles. I married a man who raped me and got me pregnant. I married him because I didn’t want to hurt his feelings. I married a man who openly slept with other women. I supported a homeless man for a year and a half. I tolerated a huge amount of rage and abuse. I attempted suicide three times, each time saved by a dear friend.
I literally gave all my money away to these men until I had nothing. My dearest friends would lend me money and pick me up after each disaster. Clearly I never understood how to put myself first, or how to honor who I truly was…because I didn’t know.
Today I understand these experiences as gifts on the road to myself. I also know I never would’ve made it through without help. A year and a half ago I was moved to start The Forgotten Dream Project. I know what it’s like to be a woman, feel alone, shameful, hopeless, and have no awareness of my own power.
As I open up my own wings, I learn to honor myself and let the largest part of me be free. As a result, I want to share with others in the hopes that it can provide the small helping hand that my friends provided me during my worst times. We all deserve that.
