guru in you

The guru in you refers to the teacher within each of us. Some people call it god, some call it light, some call it creator. The name doesn’t really matter. What’s important is the perception of it within each of us, which can guide us in life.
I’m trained in the Ayurvedic and yogic views. Ayurveda is about the body, about lifestyle, and yoga is about meditation and controlling our own thoughts. There’s also a spiritual aspect of the journey, which is the god within.
I used to work in the fashion business – which focuses on outer beauty. Through a friend and mentor I became interested in inner beauty and immersed myself in that world, too.
I’m half English and half Iranian. I was raised in Iran until I was 10, then, during the war, we went to live in England. When I was 19, somebody stopped me in the street to be a model and I left for Paris. I lived in France for a few years before I came to the States.
The thing about the high life is that if you don’t watch out, it can become the low life. At one point, while at Nelson Mandela’s house in South Africa, I realized that although he’d been in jail for more than 25 years, he accepted what had happened to him. He wasn’t bitter or angry, but peaceful. I looked around at my own life. I was doing a Versace show at Nelson Mandela’s house with people like Naomi Campbell, Kristy Turlington, and Kate Moss. It was great. I was at the top. But rather than plateau or go downhill, I decided to leave the fashion world from a place of joy. I wasn’t burnt out, but I wanted to journey to find something different.
At that time, I was already doing yoga. I became a yoga teacher and started writing books and helping people make changes for the better by focusing on the basics and taking baby steps.
The most meaningful thing to me now is the message of the guru in you. It’s the idea that what we’re seeking isn’t really the outward high life, but the inner contentment that’s already within us. Sure, get up in the morning and groom yourself to look well when you go out the door, but don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Contentment is a bigger goal than outward beauty. The bigger picture is within you.
