choices

I have the power to change my thoughts and not let anyone, or anything, ruin my day. I realize that I have a choice. I can focus on the negative side of a situation or the positive. It’s all up to me.
It seems that I have always done this in some way. It is only now, as I get older and look back, that I realize how important this ability has been in my life, particularly when things weren’t going well.
I wanted to be a scenic designer most of my life, but as a college student, I was kicked out of Yale Drama School. I chose to stay positive. I went on to design sets for major TV shows while my fellow classmates were still at Yale designing college productions.
Then the death of my wife, at the age of thirty-four, spurred me to take her great sense of humor and share the therapeutic value of humor with the world. I have continued to do this for over twenty years.
Even with daily interruptions, I make the choice to stay positive. Just recently, I received a speeding ticket, but I didn’t let the cop or the ticket ruin my upbeat mood.
Each of us always has a choice. We can’t be in both the negative and the positive at the same time. I consciously decide where I want to be. If it’s the negative side, I limit how long I will be there. For example, “I’m going to be angry for 7 minutes and 30 seconds.” Then, I move on.
Often we let fear keep us from doing what we really want to do. We’re afraid to take chances because of failure. You never know if you will succeed unless you try.
When I wanted to write my first book, people kept telling me not to waste my time. I’m glad I didn’t listen to them because my first book it is now in its 40th printing and 9th foreign language translation.
Living a life of purpose requires us to look past our fears and answer some important questions:
If you could do anything in the world, what would that be? What are you passionate about? Most importantly, what is keeping you from following that passion?
