I was born and raised in a small town in Brazil. It was peaceful and safe, but nothing exciting really happened. Most of my family lived their whole lives there and their roots were buried deep. However, as I grew up, I wondered what else there was to see in the world. And most importantly, what else was there to be.
I didn’t understand that restlessness, that desire to go away, but I knew I had to follow it. I taught English for a few years and paid for my first experience abroad – eighteen months in the USA. After that, I spent one year in Belgium. When I went back home, I felt conflicted: safe in the core of my family, while lost and uneasy in society. I felt that my place wasn’t there anymore. So I returned to Belgium, where I continue to build a new life today.
Traveling the world is a fantastic experience. You have so much fun, see such beautiful places, eat delicious food, learn about cultures, and put your own life in perspective. But for me, the most valuable lessons I learned on the journey were about relationships. The people I met on the way, the time we shared together, the situations that made me grow and become a better person – those are the memories I will always cherish. All those who crossed my path have a special place in my life, even though we no longer see each other.
That also made me understand that the most solid and loving relationship I have is with my family. No matter where I go and how long I stay, they are and will always be there for me. My lifestyle changed, but my roots and values are buried deep. I’m changed, but yet the same.
I’m so grateful I was able to follow my heart’s desire and learn so much about myself and others. I want to inspire others to be brave and discover what’s out there.
