out of box

When I look back on my life, it seems I spent the first half of it trying very hard to be like everybody else or lamenting the fact that I wasn’t like them. In the second half of my life, I became wise enough to reject such notions. I gained confidence, shed peer pressure, and embraced the things that made me different. Suddenly, standing alone outside the smothering cliques felt empowering and I could see that the very things kids made fun of, like my ethnicity, were the things that made me special. It was about more than merely embracing my flatter nose and darker skin. It was about so much more than looks. My non-white, non-majority, multi-cultural heritage shaped the way I think. And the way I think – the way anyone thinks – is what gives us the potential not only to be different or special, but to be extraordinary. It’s a gift. I became proud to use my alternate point of view to stop thinking inside the box and start thinking outside the box. Especially during my college years, I reveled in forming unorthodox, provocative thoughts and stirring things up with my peers and professors.
But something still wasn’t quite right. Thinking and acting outside the box gave new meaning to my life, but the box was still there. By ignoring it, I was still reacting to it. Then it hit me. There was an alternative to thinking either inside the box or outside the box. Maybe there didn’t even have to be a box. At that moment, the box evaporated, along with all the things it represented: my prejudices about myself and others, my dispassionate expectations, and my insecurity.
Ignoring your box is not enough. You must get rid of it. But before you do, pack it with every ounce of anything that has ever weighed you down rather than helped you to soar. Load in old resentments, new frustrations, and especially all those limiting beliefs – not only the limiting beliefs that nag at you, but also the limiting beliefs you lay on those you love. Pack the box with everything but the things that bring your life joy and meaning, then send it on its way. Drop it off at the landfill or vaporize the damn thing … just do whatever it takes to rid it from your life. Throw out the box.
