You’re probably thinking, “Yeah right. No one ever really figures it out.” If you said that, I’d say, you’re right. There is no one meaning of life.
I’ve come to realize that life is. Life is what it is moment by moment. It’s an adventure, a drama, a tragedy and a farce all mixed into one life. Mine.
On my 41st birthday the life I had worked so hard to create came crashing down, starting with the total annihilation of my marriage, and I sat in the center of the rubble, sobbing as I tried to super glue it all back together. It suddenly dawned on me that I didn’t really want to put it all back together. That it had crashed and burned on purpose to show me that I needed to stop trying to control it and start living it.
I spent an awful lot of time fighting to hold together a life, with its millions of little shards of light splitting off into a myriad of directions, constantly chasing after my bits and pieces. It’s impossible to control, and when I was in control, I was miserable. As I sat amidst the chaos of my shattered life, I decided to let it all go. I let go of control and found peace of mind.
There is a freedom in allowing your life to unfold, in working with the flow instead of constantly pushing and prodding. Finding acceptance in the struggle that comes with it and the joy that is there when I’m willing to see it. Coming to a place where life is and I am allowed to enjoy it, all of it, the good, the bad and the ugly, because it’s mine.
The meaning of life is to be. Be who you are, where you are. Remember that this moment will pass and another will take its place. The question, to me, isn’t what is the meaning of it, but rather what am I going to do with it? The possibilities are endless and what a gift it is to get to live it – all of it.
After 43 years on this planet I finally figured it out. The meaning of life that is.
