curious love

I’m committed to staying present in the moment and really living life as open-heartedly as possible. The most important part is my life with my wife, Arielle. It takes commitment to find our balance, to find that groove. We met late in life and I think that adds to the appreciation of our feelings for each other.
My mother laid down a tremendous foundation for love. I was born very curious and she gave me a long leash for exploring. I devoured lots of things. At 14, I started meditating. A friend of mine told me, “Meditation will help your basketball game.” So my mother took me down to the meditation center, and I started learning.
Did it help my basketball game? Yes! But in terms of life, the expansion of my awareness and my ability to open my heart more has been just delicious. I continue to explore Eastern philosophy and different methodologies. Arielle feels the same way and we love to add to the buffet of wonderful tools available to us.
I realized that to be centered, I need to fill myself up. We’re energy bodies, so it really is helpful to fill our bodies up with love. That means doing wonderful things like meditation. I meditate as often as I can. I swim and surf. I do breathwork. Whatever I feel I need to do to be in my heart that morning is what I do. It usually involves Arielle to some degree. We may go hiking or play tennis. That fills me up so I can go into the world and do the things I do.
If I don’t dedicate myself to some sort of nurturing, I get drained. My energy level goes down and I’m not as effective. I don’t have clarity and I’m not as open to doing the fun and caring things that we’re all capable of doing.
If I was talking to somebody who was having a really hard time and spiralling into a kind of toxic despair, I’d tell them to sit with themselves as long as they can, as painful as it is, until they break through. Sitting alone with oneself is such a tremendous tool. Though it can be difficult, it usually brings new clarity. The key is to follow that clarity.
