I changed jobs 4 years ago- left a successful political career that I had loved but grew tired of to follow my childhood dream of being an actress. When people ask me if they should make a similar change, take a leap, do something totally different, I have only this to say–
Go do something you love. Be ready to get it wrong many times. Maybe not at first, but eventually, where you are most passionate and most persistent, you will be most successful.
If it’s hard to hear, I can assure you it’s even harder to do. Not only do you need to find what is most meaningful to you and what it is that makes you come alive, you have to have the courage to constantly pursue it. And I’ve learned that you have to be able to recognize and change course when what matters to you changes.
My road has included reading bad reviews of my own words, tanking auditions and failing time and time again. But I keep reminding myself that I’d rather fail at something I love doing than succeed at something I don’t. So, yes, I wake up many days thinking, “What am I doing? Am I too old? Too crazy?” but I wake up many more days thinking, “I’m doing what I love. I’ve got so much more to do. I’m excited.”
And though I may not be winning Oscars or writing best sellers (yet, that is) I can assure you it is these such times in my life, when I have been pursuing my passions, that I have had the most meaningful days and the most meaningful successes.
