process

Nothing actually means anything. Let me explain. Before there were humans, life just happened. It arose out of mystery. One thing happened and then another. Animals make simple associations. Human beings make up all sorts of meanings. “Nothing means anything” may sound existential and dark, but so often it can be liberating because, through it, we realize that we create our own meanings.
What’s meaningful to me may be quite good for me, but that’s not the same as what life means. It’s only what life means to me. And what’s worthwhile for me may be different from what’s worthwhile for you or for someone else.
When we look at the world, we don’t see the world as it is. We see the world as we are. We see the world through a filter of our own expectations, associations, interpretations, and meanings. Barbara Rasp, a writer, once said, “The lesson is simple. The student is complicated.”
During World War II, Sir Laurens van der Post was captured and held in an internment camp. The conditions were horrible. They were treated badly. Their morale was low. They didn’t know whether they’d be executed. Some men felt extremely depressed and even suicidal. So van der Post started a university in the prison camp. He began to teach. They wrote their textbooks on what little toilet paper they had. Van der Post created something like 100 courses. The men in the camp learned from him and accredited him afterwards for not only improving their lives but for helping them survive. They hung on because they were doing something meaningful with their lives. It stimulated them. It reminded them of their value.
What is your purpose in this moment? The most meaningful time in our lives is this moment. Without a destination to aim for, there is no journey, we only wander. Moving from one purpose to the next and overcoming obstacles in the process make our lives more meaningful.
When we sort out our own values and communicate with people, we discover what’s most worthwhile in our own view. Being true to our own values – not to someone else’s views or any ultimate idea of what’s worthy – creates meaning.
