the journey

My father, a career naval officer, instilled a set of values around public service. He was a patriot in the best sense of the word. My mother instilled a love of education, language, and shared her personal motto, Excelsior.
This foundation brought me to the Naval Academy at Annapolis, where I heard John F. Kennedy’s words, “Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country.” I decided to volunteer for the Marine Corps which led me to Vietnam.
The experience of being in combat was a crucible for me. First, I organized medical teams to help local villagers combat serious health threats. Later, I would be responsible for the lives of young men, and for writing condolence letters to their families.
I returned from Vietnam to enter a new world of academe. I was called stupid for having volunteered for the Marines. Kennedy was gone, his words distant and faint.
It was some twenty years after Vietnam, while teaching leadership at Yale, that I asked myself a fundamental question: What is my unique voice? How can I use my experience to help others learn about leadership and teamwork?
As I pondered these questions, the answer seemed obvious. I realized that I could take the things I’d learned in the crucible of combat and share them with those facing other life challenges. Meanwhile, I could apply the conceptual skills developed in the academic world to shape my message. My goal: to integrate two very different worlds and use this hybrid approach to make a positive difference in people’s lives.
My search for meaning goes on, and I’m now faced with the stark reality that I can’t do this work forever. I understand, of course, the sentiment behind Woody Allen’s comment: “I don’t want to achieve immortality through my work. I want to achieve it by not dying.”
I wish him the best of luck, but I don’t want to take any chances. Immortality aside, I know that the best chance of sustaining my work lies with colleagues and friends who have a more distant horizon. I’m fortunate to have such people in my life, and I’m confident that they will continue to help others who find themselves at The Edge.
