For me, there are three really essential things that I do every day that I believe create a conscious, meaningful life. Then there is one super-meta-big thing that all of that’s wrapped around and wrapped inside of to create a magical life.
- You need to be willing to be open and feel all of your feelings, because if you deny or defend against key core human feelings, such as sadness or fear or anger or creative impulse, to do creative things, an emptiness will prevail.
- Speak honestly, so that there’s no gap between what’s going on inside and what’s you’re willing to express outside. If you speak honestly about it, it doesn’t gather momentum. It doesn’t become a lump under the rug.
- The third thing, is to be careful about the agreements you make, and then do your best to keep those agreements impeccably. If you don’t keep your agreements, then everything starts to wobble. One of my consulting buddies, Tom Peters, once said, “There is no such thing as a minor lapse of integrity.” And so it doesn’t matter if I’m 30 seconds late for a telephone call or $30,000 late in making a payment, if there’s an agreement there, I do my best to keep it, and if I don’t keep it, I do my best to fix it as soon as possible. So, feeling all your feelings, telling all the truth, and keeping all your agreements is my recipe for a sane life.

Now, my recipe for a magical life…be willing to love every moment of life, whatever you’re feeling. Love the unlovable in the moment. Love is the biggest, best, most wonderful thing we’ve ever dreamed up on this planet, and it has tremendous healing power that goes virtually untapped because we forget that one of the things love is really for, is to help us embrace the one part of ourselves that we find unlovable. One of the greatest gifts of life is that opportunity to love the unlovable in ourselves and in other people, and we come equipped with this gift. It’s not anything we have to learn. It’s here waiting for us, and now we’re learning how to steer it. We’re learning how to be with love in such a way that it can be a force for healing in our lives. I believe that it’s one of the great evolutionary tasks of our time.
