service

What’s meaningful to me is to be of service. In my 30 years of working with families to help them raise their children well, I’ve been very privileged to be invited into the heart of the family. Through those experiences, I’ve had the opportunity to develop new ideas about crying babies and about raising toddlers. What engages me now is delivering that information into as many parents’ hands possible.
It turns out that infant crying and the fatigue associated with it are primary triggers for child abuse, post-partum depression, women giving up breast feeding, sudden infant death syndrome, maternal smoking, and many serious complications that cost our culture over a billion dollars a year. It’s exciting for me to be able to use what I’ve learned to make a difference in the day-to-day lives of people raising a family and in our culture overall to decrease needless pain and suffering.
Using the techniques presented in The Happiest Toddler on the Block book and DVD, 50% of toddler temper tantrums can be stopped in seconds and 50 to 90% of tantrums can be prevented from ever happening. The concept is very simple. There are two halves of the brain, the right half and the left half. The left half deals with language and logic. The right half deals with emotionality, response to stress, the fight-or-flight reflex, and non-verbal communication, such as tone of voice and gestures. Toddlers have an immature left brain, but a rather mature right brain. If you look frightened, your one-year-old understands that you’re frightened. If you say to your one-year-old, “Mother is frightened,” they have no idea what you’re talking about.
We all turn off our left brain when we get upset, becoming less eloquent, less reasonable, and less logical. I refer to that as “going ape.” Toddlers start out ape. When they get upset, they turn off the little bit of left brain they have and they go Jurassic. They become primitive, like little cavemen. So when a toddler is upset, if you change your language to short phrases and lots of repetition, and you match their emotions a little bit, the child instantly feels heard and calms down.
During the first three to four years of life, we have the opportunity to lay the foundation for teaching children how to interact with people and how to be in society. I’m privileged to be of service in helping parents raise children who are kind, respectful, considerate, intelligent, and capable of handling their own feelings in a constructive way. It’s much easier than we thought.
