pursuit

I was a bright-eyed, pig-tailed 7 year old when I went on my first quest. It was through the woods behind my house. I was armed with a backpack of essentials—you know—cookies and a hoodie, and I was in pursuit of the perfect place to build my tree fort.
I wandered through those tall trees feeling independent, purpose-driven and focused. I was filled with a sense of personal power.
This is my earliest memory of a peak experience.
I can’t remember if I ever found that perfect tree-fort location, but that doesn’t seem important right now. What mattered to me was the pursuit itself.
Since that forest quest, my life has been woven together with thread upon thread of meaningful pursuits. My quests have been for love, education, healing, travel, entrepreneurship, fertility, forgiveness, courage, enlightenment, health, leadership, and money.
I know for sure that I feel most like myself when I am engaged and moving toward my higher purpose, my deepest truth. In fact, if I had a bumper sticker it might read: Self-actualization is my North Star.
Maybe that’s what meaning really is– feeling like your truest self?
Each quest has been rich with emotion and learning. They’ve brought me new relationships, big opportunities, beginnings and endings. At times they’ve brought me closer to my true self, but often they’ve led me far, far away from who I want to be.
That’s the thing about a quest. They can be filled with gleeful anticipation and mountains of uncertainty. Quests require us to commit to ourselves and our cause. They invite awareness and choice and accountability.
