Right now I think not having anything that’s the most important thing to me would give me personal freedom. If I’m trying too hard for anything, it’s going to lead to stress and fleeting happiness because nothing’s permanent, whether it’s money, or health, or family, or whatever. My goal on a daily basis is to note when I’m striving too hard for something, either negative or positive, and try to deal with those feelings. That gets me a little freer each day.
In the 90’s I made a lot of money, about 15 million cash. Then I was stupid. Between 2000 and 2002, when the Internet bust was raging, I managed to lose every dime of it. I went completely broke. That wasn’t on paper. It was cash.
I kept doubling-down because I felt like I needed to. I had fifteen, but I thought I needed a hundred in order to be happy. I didn’t understand what I had, so I just kept spending and spending, investing and investing. I managed to successfully do what probably few have done, which is completely go from generations of wealth to zero.
I was constantly anxious about losing money, or about making money, or holding on to money. Whatever business I was in I was anxious about every single aspect of it. Now, my goal is to avoid all of that.
I find that I’m happier when I’m not thinking about tomorrow. I’ll do the best I can today. If I want to write, I’ll write the best blog post I can think of. I’m not doing nothing, but I don’t want to worry about tomorrow, and I don’t want to worry about yesterday. I just want to be happy with what I have right now and always do what I think is the right, fun, interesting thing to do right now.
A lot of people are in this situation where they feel stuck. The first key is to get back to a starting point.
What can you do today that improves your physical health?
What can you do today that improves your emotional health?
What can you do today that improves your mental health?
What can you do today that improves your spiritual health?
If you start from that point and you think of those four legs. I’ve done that over and over again, and my life’s been a hundred percent different if I focus on those four legs every day.
