manifest

I’m a yoga teacher, but I don’t think that sums me up. I joke and say I’m a joyologist. I use yoga as a way to get bodies into the room … and then I play!
My manifestations are what’s most meaningful to me, what I’m doing with my writing and my job. I love what I do and I do what I love, so even calling it a job is weird to me. I hope that even by saying that I inspire people.
I have a hearing problem. I’m mostly deaf. I was also severely anorexic for a long time. I was depressed. I worked at the same restaurant in Los Angeles for a while and was trying to be an actress, but not really. Someone would say, “What do you do?” I’d say, “I’m an actress,” but I was in no way pursuing it. I was just waiting for someone to show up.
Then some things happened with my family and I had a nervous breakdown. I started doing more yoga, which kept me sane. Some friends recommended that I start yoga training. It didn’t sound appealing to me, but I did it. When I taught my first class I realized I had a gift. Is teaching yoga my gift? I don’t know. I do know that I have a gift for connecting with people.
I’ve found my calling and my bliss. If I hadn’t had this journey, if I wasn’t hard of hearing or hadn’t suffered with depression, I don’t think I’d be as inspiring or as authentic.
Sometimes I’ll have people make joy lists or I’ll have dance parties or I’ll say, “Let’s do things that allow you to connect to what you’re doing.” A lot of people don’t know their bliss or their calling until they start really connecting to the things that make them come alive.
I have people do the “I am _______” exercise. I have them fill in that blank, but not with “I am fat” or “I am broke” or “I am tired.” They sit in a circle, look into each other’s eyes and realize that other people see them as something powerful. For some people, it’s overwhelming, because they’ve never done anything like that.
Nowadays, if I feel that my time is being wasted on nonsense, I pause and become really mindful of everything I’m putting into myself, including every person I’m talking with. I get to decide, and I only want to do things that inspire me. If I’m open to good stuff, I’m going to find synchronicity everywhere.
