time play

I’ve been thinking about how we relate to time. There’s a metaphor in the English language that “time is money,” but it goes further than just that phrase. We talk about spending time, saving time, and wasting time. The verbs we use for time are money verbs. I’ve been thinking about how stingy I am with my time.
I’ve been thinking of my time as being more valuable than whoever wants to spend time with me. I’ve been refusing to share my time with people so I can prepare my TED talk. This sense of urgency makes me even more stingy with my time. Stinginess comes from a feeling of scarcity. Wouldn’t taking on a feeling of generosity with time give time more value and make us more generous? What we think we have in abundance, we share.
I’m taking a class that’s asking of its participants, “What is your impossible promise to the world?” It’s requiring me to think about how I want to be of service. How can I think of myself as bigger than I’ve known myself to be, so I can grow into something bigger for the world? This question is part of what’s bringing up these time thoughts for me now, because who has time for anything impossible anymore?
If I spend so much of my time worrying about saying the right thing, doing the right thing, and being as meaningful, deep, and insightful as I can be – I end up saying and doing nothing. It’s easier if I make meaning something mundane, something I do every day. My access to doing this is through play. If I treat making meaning as a game, if I go ahead and say something but then don’t like what I said, I can play with saying something else. I make it into a game.
It’s the game of our lives.
