inner voice

The most meaningful thing to me is trusting my inner voice – opening to a presence larger than myself and testing it to guide me in my life. This has always been meaningful to me. I’ve always looked up at the sky and the stars and felt a strong connection to that larger presence.
I listen to my intuitions. I have a very sensitive body that reacts to being thrown off, usually by busyness. I get extremely tired, a little anxious, a bit more impatient, or don’t feel as energized or positive as I’d like. I reconnect by meditation – that’s my primary spiritual practice. I get quiet and spend time in nature. I walk a lot by the ocean and up in the canyons by the Pacific Coast. I meditate and spend more time at my altar, where I tune in and come back to my art again.
I began to really listen to my intuitions and open up to spirit when I had an experience that was a huge turning point for me. A patient came to see me for depression and I had a premonition that she was going to kill herself. I didn’t listen. I was going more on clinical data and there was nothing pointing to her being suicidal. But she overdosed on the anti-depressants I prescribed for her and ended up in a coma for several months. She survived, thank God, but that awakened me to being a more responsible and intuitive physician.
It means a lot to me to help people tune in to their own intuition. A patient I’m treating now is in her 90s. She was diagnosed with a huge aneurism and had to decide whether or not to have surgery at this stage in her life. That was a pivotal point for her. She tuned in and decided not to have the surgery, but to enjoy her life as it is, rather than gaining a couple more years. She’s using the time she has to get more deeply in touch with spirit and her intuition, to be with her family, and to be of service. She’s done great work.
Everybody wants more meaning in their life. People come to me mainly because they read my books about how to integrate spirituality with energy medicine and intuition and traditional psychiatry. I incorporate all of those elements, including trusting my own inner voice, to help my patients find meaning beyond traditional medical meaning. And that means a lot to me.
