generosity

I grew up in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, where my father was a steelworker and my mother was a cleaning lady. My entire family and I worked double shifts so I could be sent to the very best prep schools and, ultimately, to Yale for undergraduate studies and then on to Harvard Business School. This imbued me with a sense of gratitude that has deeply influenced my belief that generosity in relationships is the cornerstone of success.
My way of connecting to the world around me is through helping friends connect with other friends. I make a distinction between genuine relationship-building and the crude, desperate glad-handing usually associated with “networking.”
The system I use for reaching out to people can be distilled into practical, proven principles, including these:
Don’t keep score. It’s never simply about getting what I want. It’s about getting what I want and making sure that the people who are important to me get what they want, too.
“Ping” constantly. I reach out to and check in with the people in my circle of contacts all the time – not only when I need something.
Never eat alone. The dynamics of status are the same whether we’re working at a corporation or attending a society event. “Invisibility” is a fate worse than failure.
If we want to transform, we need the help of others. When we build our relationships through generosity, everyone succeeds.
