I witnessed September 11th from my apartment a block south of the twin towers. Like everyone, I had a very emotional reaction to witnessing both planes hitting the towers and seeing them collapse before my eyes. A few weeks after 9/11, I attended the exhibition of Artemisia Gentileschi at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Gentileschi was an Italian Baroque painter, today considered one of the most accomplished painters in the generation after Caravaggio. During the exhibition I began to understand the struggles she had to overcome 400 years ago.
I felt sadness for all those who perished in 9/11 and the loved ones who were affected. I gained a level of respect for Gentileschi who lived in an era when female painters were not easily accepted by the artistic community or patrons. She became known for painting many pictures of strong and suffering women from myth and the Bible and made a speciality of the Judith story. For many years she was regarded as a curiosity. Today she is regarded as one of the most progressive and expressionist painters of her generation.
My life before 9/11 was one focused more on my own material success. After experiencing that tragedy and attending that exhibit, I became more sensitive to my own pursuits and to the struggle that artists everywhere have to go through to make a career for themselves and their loved ones. As I walked through the Gentileschi exhibition and heard stories of her hardships, the clarity of my purpose in life began to change. I realized that I could be a voice to many artists who didn’t have the strength or determination necessary to become a success in the art world. The experiences in 2001 were the basis of my pioneering efforts to launch KiptonART in order to give artists access and a voice in the dark. Now the most meaningful thing to me is continuing my passion to build the careers of these emerging artists.
Some people are afraid to take chances and play it ‘safe’ in their life choices by not going outside of their comfort zone. To them I present these questions:
What keeps you up at night?
What do you dream about?
What strengths do you have that are noticed by others?
What makes you happy?
You will be amazed at what you discover about yourself.
