community

Looking back over my life, I see that everything’s been about creating community, whether I’ve known it or not. A lot of that came from my Mom, who always let me know that community was important. “Look around,” she’d say. “Are there any kids feeling left out?”
Community is about gathering and about working for the common good. It’s one of the most basic human needs because it’s about being included and accepted. It’s about being safe.
I make movies for a living, which is a collaborative art form that I love. Every time I make a film I’m in a creative community with my team.
A few years ago, I was having second thoughts, asking myself if I’m really doing what I love. I asked my friends, “What do you think I’m good at?” Every one of them said, “You bring people together.” Until then, I hadn’t realized that about myself. That was a turning point for me. It reinspired and reinvigorated me in my work as a filmmaker – creating community and telling stories that hopefully bring people together.
We have to accept that we’re part of the human community, all on this earth together. People often seem compelled to differentiate themselves from others out of fear. That creates a fragile community, because community can’t sustain itself on fear.
The whole point of making community is to come together, to find that we all have something in common, and to learn about each other. When I looked up the word “community” I discovered that it’s created from root words meaning “gift” and “with or together.” Community is about the gift of coming together. Learning that crystalized its importance for me.
When we were in New Zealand making the film Whale Rider, an old woman called Aunty Bumpy would come out every day and ask, “What can I do to help, dear?” I’d say, “Oh, just come and sit. It’s nice to have your company.” But on the third or fourth day, I realized that she really wanted to be part of the family, part of the community telling this story of her creation myth.
I’d been knitting a sweater for the grandfather to wear in the final scene, so I said, “You know what, I don’t much like knitting sleeves. I’ll knit the body of the sweater and you knit the sleeves. We’ll make this sweater together.” And we did. We sat in community with each other and created something together. That was one of my favorite things ever.
