At this point in my life it is all about connection with others and how I can use my gifts to help others be their best. This is quite liberating in that I do not base my worth or wealth on materialism. Of course, money is important as it buys opportunity, but I have discovered that my true wealth comes from within. These enduring riches thrive through an economy of interconnectedness.
In 2006 I had the great fortune of going to India on a cycling trip. During this adventure I began to realize the extreme joy and beauty in the light of her people. What was that magical ingredient? How could I bottle it and teach it to a Western society so commonly afflicted with “Affluenza?”
Shortly thereafter, I began co-producing my documentary film, H-Factor…Where Is Your Heart? with my then nine-year-old daughter, Kayla, as my graduate school thesis project. H-Factor is an exploration of human happiness—where to find it and how to keep it. Little did I know that this work would become my life and I would become a professional “jubilator.”
One of the great gifts of time, age, and hopefully wisdom is that we recognize that we are human. In our humanness it is impossible to be 100% on point all the time. To find my way back to equanimity, I focus on gratitude for all that is right with life. I meditate to reduce the symptoms of stress and to refocus my energy. I laugh at my serious self. I employ the value of wonder and curiosity to hold my attention to life in this moment.
Time and time again people are most often their own worst enemies by sitting in judgment of themselves, others and systems over which they have no control or true desire to change. This is spirit breaking and keeps us separated from ourselves, others and finding a true sense of meaning in life. A good dose of forgiveness for ourselves and others who don’t always measure up to our expectations is a gateway to flourishing.
