listen

Years ago, when I was in the process of reinventing myself, I tried hard to figure out what I wanted to do next with my life. I read books, talked to people, created a vision map of what I wanted to create. I felt closer to my answers and directions than I had before, but I still felt confused and uncertain. One day, I tried a new approach. I started asking myself questions and simply listened for the answers. No pushing or trying to make something happen. I just asked and listened. Simple.
To my surprise, I started to get some great ideas that intuitively felt just right. The ideas weren’t necessarily THE BIG IDEA kind, but were little steps moving me towards the next step. Slowly my direction began to unfold and I knew in my heart I was on the right path. In addition to feeling guided inwardly, I noticed that I was attracting the perfect people and situations to support my new direction.
I started paying more attention to the little signs in my life. I listened to what was showing up, how I was feeling and thinking, and who I was attracting into my life, as well as to my overall energy level. Paying attention to the little signs was a way I started taking really good care of myself.
How did I learn to listen to myself? There are a few ways that work for me. I write in a journal about what I’m observing about myself, I practice meditation – sometimes with a specific intention, and (my favorite) I engage in an inner conversation with myself as I take a walk. I ask myself questions and listen to what comes forward. A question I like to ask myself is, “How can I support myself moving forward?” I act as if I’m having a conversation with my best friend. I stay present and listen to what I have to say. The answers are pure magic and conversations with myself continue to be one of most supportive ways I listen to myself.
How can you begin? Start paying attention to you. Be genuinely interested in how you feel, what you have to say, and where your heart and passions take you. Ask yourself questions and listen for the answers. Trust that you will be guided to where you need to be.
To listen to myself is to know myself – my strengths, my weaknesses, all the parts that make up who I am. What greater way is there to love myself than to listen to what truly matters to me? I wake up every day with an opportunity to discover new things about the world and how I can live a life that’s guided by the truth of my heart.
