music

In 2008, when I was eleven years old, my dad died in an avalanche. It was a devastating experience. Thankfully, I had a lot of support through a grief group, my family, and friends. That was when I really discovered my love for music. I started to make up songs in my head and soon began singing and playing guitar. Music helped me cope. It became a really important part of my life.
Whether I’m creating my own music or listening to someone else’s, music gives my life meaning. It helps me work through my emotions. It lifts my mood and keeps me happy.
That doesn’t mean I always need to listen to upbeat music. When I’m feeling down, listening to a song that compliments my mood isn’t wallowing but a way for me to get that feeling out without having to work through it entirely alone.
I write different songs depending upon how I feel. These songs help me express myself when I’m struggling to verbalize my emotions or when I can’t find the right words to say. The song doesn’t have to be about the incident itself. The process alone helps me voice my thoughts more clearly.
Maybe one of my friends is in a difficult situation and I need to give them some sort of tough love or direction. Writing a song helps me focus on the situation and find the needed words. Then I don’t end up saying the wrong thing.
Listening to music, playing an instrument, and writing lyrics are all great ways to work through emotions and gain new perspectives. I’m reminded of a line in the song “Hazey Jane II,” by Nick Drake, which I think of often when things get tough. It’s not a song I listen to a lot, but when I heard the lyrics, they stuck with me: “If songs were lines in a conversation, the situation would be fine.”
