Love and God are two things that have always been most meaningful to me, although I probably wouldn’t have used that language earlier in my life. My life has had a number of turning points, but one of the most significant was when I had an episode of severe, suicidal depression at the age of 21. It rocked me to my core and made me question everything I’d learned, believed, and been taught about life. It brought me to my knees and forced me to reach out and get help and support – which showed up in the form of an incredible spiritual counselor and teacher, putting me on a path of personal and spiritual growth that continues today.
More often than I’d like to admit, I get caught up in ego-comparisons, obsessive actions, and self-criticism. When that happens, there are a few things I do. I communicate about what’s going on for me, as vulnerably as I can, and I write about it, pray, meditate, and talk to God.
I think most of us get caught up in superficial pursuits and concerns – about how we look, how much money we make, and what others think of us. We get stuck in negative patterns of worry and self-consciousness. When that happens, I find it helpful to keep listening to my heart, go for what I want, ask for help, tell the truth, and be willing to mess up.
I’m working to more deeply understand and experience a true sense of self-acceptance, self-appreciation, and self-love. I’ve been speaking and writing about those things for many years, but want to experience them in a more authentic and sustainable way … and then teach them to others.
