possibility

What is most meaningful in my life? Laughing with my daughters, being with my wife, throwing balls for my golden retriever, listening to a river’s susurrus, and trying to answer poet Mary Oliver’s question: “What is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”
My answer is to share what I’ve learned with whoever cares to listen or whoever I may inspire to listen. What I have learned by now – I’m in my eighth decade – is that hope, passion, and intelligence are essential if we are to save this beautiful blue planet of ours.
Helen Caldicott wrote, “We were born for one reason … We were born to save the creation.” I believe this to be true and I believe that education is the primary means to that salvation. Furthermore, meaningful education must embrace four values and goals at the core: environmental sustainability, economic and social justice, respect for cultural and racial diversity, and, finally – critically – population control. Lest these issues seem too serious and grim, I hasten to add that the study and celebration of these four values can be accomplished in educational and cultural contexts of joy and creativity. Schools, for example, can and should be magical places to which children and youth are eager to go, places where self-expression, individualized learning, and artistic collaborations are encouraged, and where service to others is built into the curriculum.
How do I keep myself engaged in the process of saving creation? The answer is easy – I look at the beauty of this world, at the grace and dignity and curiosity of so many students, and at the denial of simple decency for so many, and I am eager each day to do what I can to address inequities and expand possibilities. As Emily Dickinson wrote, “I dwell in possibility.”
I take courage from music and literature, and through reading and writing poetry, which show me doors that open to life. Lines like W.B. Yeats’ “O body swayed to music, O brightening glance, how can we know the dancer from the dance?” and W.H. Auden’s “In the prison of his days, teach the free man how to praise” help keep me grounded and inspired.
