average

In our society, we seem to be very good at making ourselves unhappy. We’re good at setting the bar higher than what we can achieve. We all struggle to live our lives in a way that’s consistent with our ideals – the hard part is trying to figure out where to set the bar.
Women carry a lot of the burden for the family. One of the most exciting things I’ve seen lately is a program developed for immigrants in Canada called Learning through Play. It’s based on the simple notion that play has value and that it helps to play with your children.
It was great to see fathers accepting responsibility and understanding the value of educating their children by playing with them and being tender and loving. I asked some of the fathers what they’d learned. They said, “We didn’t realize that playing was part of our role in raising our children. We thought our role was to teach them how to hunt or bring in the crops or dig a hole … but play? That was just something kids did and we thought it was a waste of our time.
I believe everybody can make a difference. If I’m special, that means other people can’t do what I’m doing. I don’t believe I’m special. I’m an average guy who’s dealt with failure just like everybody else. In many ways, being average is my goal.
People are always looking at how successful other people are. Today, success is frequently measured by fame or money, but there are a lot of quite wealthy people who aren’t very happy or satisfied. And there are lots of successful people who don’t necessarily look successful on the outside. In the developing world, many people have rich, happy lives, living simply as farmers or fishermen. That’s success.
We’re all the same, really. I relate to that when I’m sitting on a stump with a farmer or talking with a child soldier in the Congo. I often have a sense then that we’re much more alike that they think we are.
Here’s what I want on my gravestone: “Phillip Maher … an incredibly average guy.”
