In 1998, the house I grew up in burned down. We lost everything. Luckily no one was hurt. The only way I can describe that day was that the series of events seemed to happen in slow motion. Firefighters put out the fire while a snack track pulled up in front of our house and asked if anyone wanted a soda. Bizarre but true. I found some strange humor in that moment and was the only one who said, “Sure, I’ll have a coca-cola.”
So I drank a Coke and watched my house burn down. People I hadn’t seen since grade school showed up to help us clean. Someone rescued the pot roast in our oven, and we had dinner and slept at a neighbor’s house that night. The next day my parents, sister, and I went to buy clothes since we didn’t have any left. My dad made us laugh by purchasing a pair of shoes and saying “Look girls, these shoes would go great with my…”
I realized in that moment, as my dad held up his new pair of shoes, the first and only new thing he owned, that what matters most is not the things we surround ourselves with, but the people we choose to share our lives with.
It’s the people in my life that continue to inspire me to write and perform.
