A few years ago, a journalist came to my home to interview me for an article on the psychology of success. At the end of a very stimulating interview, the journalist asked if I would e-mail an answer to one final question: “What is your ultimate secret to success?” I thanked her for asking me such a great question and promised her I would compose something within a week.
A few days later, I took the morning off to spend some time with my question. It was a busy week, with several deadlines to meet, but this felt important. I took time to review what my life had taught me about success. I thought about the teachers and mentors who had inspired me so much. I reflected on my meetings with successful people in business, medicine, politics, and sports. I searched for a golden thread. It became clear to me that success is about love and about being deeply inspired by what you aim for.
After meditating for several hours on my “ultimate secret of success,” I wrote something I called the “Love Dedication.” These words have become like a personal mission statement to me. When I e-mailed the “Love Dedication” to the journalist, I said I would probably include these words in a book one day. Here is what I wrote:
Before you dedicate your life
to a person, a marriage, a family;
to a corporation, a political party,
a peace campaign;
to a religion, a revolution, a
spiritual path;
make one other dedication first.
First dedicate yourself to LOVE.
Decide to let Love be your
intention, your purpose and
your point.
And then let Love inspire you,
support you, and guide you
in every other dedication
you make thereafter.
To dedicate your life to love is the ultimate secret to success because love is intelligent. When one studies the effects of love – as opposed to fear, anxiety, or cynicism – it’s apparent that every loving thought is a source of strength that helps to create a more beautiful life. Love is intelligent because love inspires vision, love strengthens values, love excites imagination, love expands possibility, and love is creative. Love is what is meaningful, and being a loving person is the key to true success and happiness.
