I was fortunate to have a mom who introduced me to so many ways of embracing Christianity. I realized that there’s something bigger than me. Even if my day is stressful or things get frustrating, I can look at the bigger picture and my perspective will be altered because, in the grand scheme of things, I believe that I’m called for a bigger purpose.
There are times in my day when I get off-kilter. Something or someone frustrates me and I get away from the balanced, peaceful path of happiness I try to walk. When that happens, I quickly revert to calming myself, praying, and looking inside. I have to ask myself, “Ryan, is it really that big of a deal?”
It’s important to do that quickly, because things can snowball and I can suddenly become very fearful and doubtful. I can start to retreat instead of being aggressive and pushing forward. As soon as I put things in big-picture scale, the problem I’m going through becomes small and much more manageable.
Time also plays a role. In this moment, things may be difficult, but in a week, a year, or five years from now, it may be something I look back on and realize that in retrospect it didn’t bother me at all.
When we go through those rough patches in life, it’s important to take ourselves out of the equation. So many of us feel like our purpose is about self, but it’s not really about us. Our purpose is about something greater than ourselves, whether that’s family, friends, job, or something else we believe in.
No matter what we’re doing, when we realize that if we’re doing it to honor something greater than ourselves, we’re fulfilling our purpose.
