inside out

What makes me tick is helping people become more aware of themselves, find duty in themselves, and become more responsible with their daily lives and with the world.
This started for me a while back, when I made a shirt for my friend who had lost his daughter. I printed a picture of his daughter on the inside of the shirt just above the heart, so he could keep her image close to him at all times. His and his family’s reactions told me I was doing what I needed to do.
I’m 51 and have been thinking about what I’ve gone through, what I’ve been doing, and the second half of my life. I decided to write what I call my Life’s Mission, Second Act, and really look at what my purpose is. In doing so, I feel like I’ve lifted a weight off my shoulders and I can now go and do what my calling is.
My goal is to inspire people to explore their inner peace and become more aware of the beauty in their lives and in the world around them, to empower people, whether verbally, through the affirmation on a shirt, or with kindness in general.
After that first shirt I made for my friend, I started doing shirts for other friends with different issues. Then their friends called and asked me to do shirts for them. Then their friends called. People would be crying when they called. I’d made things before, but I’d never had people calling and crying over them.
I started to see then why I’d been in the clothing business, which hadn’t always been great for me. But all the things I learned during those 20 years in the clothing business help me with my purpose. I don’t even need to change jobs, just apply a concept to the apparel work I’ve already been doing.
One of the affirmations we print inside the shirts is, “Kind words are like honey, sweet to the soul and healthy to the body. Words are a powerful tool. I will use them wisely.” I think if we all did that, if people thought first about what they said, we’d have more peace.
