priorities

I always knew I wanted one child, and I knew I wanted that child to be a boy. Everybody around me wanted a girl, but I wanted a boy, and I won.
Now my son is seven years old, and he provides mystery and entertainment every day. This morning, he found a red bug in his bathroom. Apparently, this red bug looked different from other bugs. He was so excited that with daddy’s help, he stuck this bug in a little jar and took it to school to show it off.
There are many things that children do for us. They show us life in a different way then we see it as adults. They add something special to each day. My son, my family life, and my work life are the most important things to me. By keeping track of my priorities, I balance it all one day at a time.
I’m usually somebody who is extremely focused. So those points in my life when I don’t know what I want to do are very memorable. They’re the rare occasions when I have to figure out what I’m going to do next.
When I feel I’ve lost my rudder, I systematically go through a long process of investigating different options and understanding my passions until I stumble upon a decision. Whether I’m trying to find a solution to a problem or just get through a bad day, I start with a reasoned approach. I try to figure out what’s bothering me. Then I ask myself, is there anything I can do about it? I try to generate options. If none of my options seem reasonable or workable, I say to myself, okay, how are you going to accept this? What can you do now?
After I finish this systematic process, I reflect on my emotions. I do little things that make me happy like eating a treat that I really like or listening to some music.
If anything, I would say that today my life is filled with more than I expected. And I’m completely happy with that.
