similarities

Throughout human history, there has always been conflict. Differences in opinion, religion, or skin color have all torn rifts between cultures and drawn lines in the sand. I would like to focus right now, though, on similarities. What makes us the same? How is this human like another human? I think there’s one way we’re all very much the same: I don’t believe there’s any human being who likes to be alone. (Aloneness is being alone; loneliness is a feeling.) It is this want – to not be alone – that I think gives us the instinct to share. We share not just our presence, but our feelings, in many ways. Whether verbally, spiritually, artistically, or musically, we share our feelings. This makes music very important to me.
A few years ago, a man by the name of Justin Ouellette, founder of the online mixtape service Muxtape.com, released a statement on the story of his late music-sharing website, which had been shut down in 2008 due to legal complications in 2008. Oullette wrote, “I love music. I believe that for people who love music, the desire to share it is innate and crucial for music itself. When we find a song we love, we beckon our friends over to the turntable, we loan them the CD, we turn up the car stereo, we put it on a mixtape.” The honest simplicity of these words about how we find a way struck me. And he continued, “We do this because music makes us feel and we want someone else to feel it, too.”
Music is a sharing of feeling. On the turntable, from the CD, over the car stereo, through a mixtape – we are sharing our feelings by tone and melody, and creating something holy. That is what matters the most to me.
