love and music

When I was about eight years old I had an experience on the football field at recess. After running with the football and having numerous people try unsuccessfully to tackle me, I made it across our little make-believe goal line and had a moment where everything just stopped. I saw everything from 360 degrees and from above and below. In that moment, I had a desire to help bring peace to the world.
I never spoke to anyone about that experience. At the time, my whole world revolved around football, yet I’d always been deeply perplexed about why people were hurtful to others. In football, I was a linebacker and a fullback. My mentality was to hit people in the game as hard as I possibly could – and I was really good at it – but it was a game. I never understand why people were bullies or picked fights and I always took the position of trying to stand up for people being bullied.
Also, ever since I was a small child, I’ve been fascinated by how certain types of music gave me goosebumps and really made me feel good. I’ve always looked for that sort of music. I’ve never done drugs, but I was always looking for the high feeling that music can give, that deep emotional space. By the time I was in my late teens, my friends and I knew rock and roll backwards and forwards. Then, in college, I became more and more interested in music and I became a D.J. I began to notice that ambient music gave me the euphoric experience I was always looking for from music.
After college, I went to work for a major corporation, selling industrial process control computers. I was engaged and doing quite well … I thought. Then, in a 24-hour period, both my fiancé and my job dumped me. I was turned completely upside down.
One day, after weeks of trying to meditate and back my mind out of depression, I heard the word “music” very loudly. I said, “Okay, great.” I thought about music in the context of what I would love to do the most and I had an instantaneous reaction. I realized that what’s important to me is the power of music and the possibility of peace on the planet.
If we don’t have inner peace, we simply won’t have outer peace. It’s that simple. Music has been my experience of peace. It touches the heart. And it’s easy to share.
