The older I get the more I realize how young I’ve been. The day I got my driver’s license, my 16-year-old self would have said I was a total grown-up and had finally arrived. Isn’t that how most of us felt at 16? I spent much of my youth being fairly self-centered – absorbed in my problems and my own little world. It took some very heavy moments to wake me up, to open my eyes to all that was around me and to change my perspective.
Life itself is what I’ve come to discover is most meaningful to me – the breath in my lungs and the length of my arms to embrace every moment. My passion for life came to me through the deaths and tragedies I’ve experienced. My high school friend and her unborn child were killed in a car accident. A family friend committed suicide. My grandfather passed away. My best friend’s husband was hit by a car while bicycling. Although his life was spared, he was left paralyzed. These losses illuminated for me the beauty of life. From deep sorrow came an even deeper appreciation.
I realize I have yet to obtain Yoda-like wisdom, but the day I grasped the fragility and preciousness of life was the day my attitude and perspective were transformed. Now, even on my worst days, when I’m stressed about work, dealing with drama, going through a break-up, or facing my toughest challenges – all I have to do is step back and embrace the privilege it is to be breathing in that moment, even if that means feeling frustration or heartache.
Every day people die so much earlier than they ever expected to. Every morning I make a decision to live for the ones who are no longer here. If we could travel through our lives, careers, and relationships realizing that every day is a gift, that even our worst day is a blessing, we could change our lives and our world. I don’t need to be a Jedi Master to find that magic.
