the process

For me, a meaningful life comes from the doing, not necessarily the achieving. I find my joy in the quest, in the learning, and in the relationships built along the way. What I retain as special is the process versus the achievement.
Achievement is a shorter burn. By the time I achieve something, I’ve already got other things in the works. As soon as I make it somewhere, I’m looking for the next thing to move forward to.
I think I’m wired to quest. An astrologer once asked me, “Were you a preemie?” I said, “Yes. How do you know that?” She said, “Because your chart shows that you couldn’t wait to get out of there and get on with your life.” Looking back, that’s very true. I grew up in rural Pennsylvania and my parents were not by any means uneducated, but their view of where life was going was not worldly. I wanted more. I wanted to know more.
I get so driven that I become tense and have to remind myself to stop and think. I’ve put up Post-It Notes to remind myself. One says “Meditate.” Another says, “Be in the moment.” I also have notes to remind myself to visualize, to put myself into the feeling of where I want to go.
How do you have a more meaningful life? Start with the basics. Whether or not it brings you income or is an imposition to others or is possible on a daily basis … what is your joy? Distill it down to the basics, then build from there. What are the very basics of your joy, your interests, and your talents? See where they connect and start brainstorming.
Things come so much more quickly if we simply ask for exactly what we want. I’m a big supporter of asking those who know more than I do. A huge part of success is knowing what you’re not good at and having the humility to ask other people for their opinions. I like to send out feelers. Who knows what? Who knows who? Who can help educate me? Who can help open doors for me? Who can make an introduction? If you’re stuck, be really open. Ask for what you want and listen to other people’s ideas.
I like to collaborate. It’s great to have other minds around that energize me. I’d like to do more work with people who help me step up to the plate and think in a different direction than I would if left to my own devices. I want to be inspired by other people.
